Interesting. One of my nieces has autism; she does not describe herself as
autistic. She is fortunate to be within a spectrum of autism disorders that
allows her to respond to different therapies (physical, occupational,
social, etc). For her, the key was early detection. After many years of
love, patience and work, she is able to fully participate in most activities
and has learned how to manage those that still concern her. She has always
loved the typical movie experience. Once I brought her to a New Orleans
Hornets game, told her about the opening ceremony fire works, lights and
noise, and she requested we remain in the lobby until after that portion of
the event. She wore ear protection during the game, danced for the 'dance
cam', cheered, etc. The weather was cold that night and the ear protection
looked more like she just wanted to keep ear warmers on. She's in the 5th
grade now, has been a regular team member of different sports, and attends
regular classes. This sensory friendly event should be a real treat for
youngsters.

'Sensory-friendly' event for autistic children, others

A sensory-friendly movie event will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday,
September 29th, at Chalmette Movies, 8700 West Judge Perez Drive. The event
will provide the same family entertainment as any trip to the movies but
with accommodations to make the experience a more comfortable and acceptable
one for children with special needs.

The sound in the theater will be turned down and the lights dimmed rather
than dark. Audience members will be welcome to get up and move around, and
the policy of silence during the movie's showing is not enforced during the
event.

Saturday's movie will be the re-release of "Finding Nemo" in 2-D (not 3-D).

Admission to the sensory-friendly movie showing is $6.50 per person. Parents
are encouraged to arrive in time to purchase your child's favorite movie
snacks and get settled in your seats.

For more information about this movie event, contact Ellis Fortinberry, at

Thank you,

Ellis Fortinberry
