St. Bernard Parish voters overwhelmingly approved a measure Tuesday to
create a parish ethics board. The board will have five members, who will be
selected among people nominated by the presidents or chancellors of the
University of New Orleans, Loyola University, Tulane University, Xavier
University and Nunez Community College. The members will serve four-year
terms.

The ethics board is an outgrowth of the efforts by the Parish Council and
President Dave Peralta's to push for ethics reforms and transparency in
local government.

When introduced by the administration, the proposal had Holy Cross College
instead of Nunez to maintain independence of the body, but the Parish
Council on July 17 changed the proposal to instead include Nunez, with
Council Chairman Guy McInnis saying, "I really do think (Nunez) can put
someone in who would be independent."
