A Chalmette man has been booked with 11 vehicle burglaries in one night, St.
Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office detectives said Tuesday. Jason Knight, 33,
was arrested early Sunday morning in connection with the burglaries of two
vehicles in his neighborhood, a Sheriff's Office spokesman said.
Knight was booked Monday in nine additional burglaries reported the same
night as the original two, once detectives spotted him in a nearby store's
surveillance footage pulling on car door handles and entering vehicles. Some
stolen property has been recovered.
Knight's home address was listed on Rosetta Drive in Chalmette, but he had
just moved in with his sister at 2025 Octavia St., a Sheriff's Office
spokesman said.
A witness on Octavia Street in Chalmette told detectives he saw Knight get
in and out of two vehicles parked in a nearby driveway around 2 a.m. Sunday.
The witness asked what he was doing, and the man said he had the permission
of the owners to go into the vehicles, but the witness, who knew the owners
of the vehicles, grew suspicious. The witness alerted the vehicles' owners,
who contacted police when they discovered that money left inside the
automobiles was missing. Deputy Jason Spadoni and fellow officers caught
Knight, who was originally booked in those two burglaries as well as
resisting an officer.
Knight -- whose criminal record includes arrests for burglary, shoplifting
and drugs -- is being held in St. Bernard Parish Prison in lieu of bond set
at $44,500.
St. Bernard Sheriff James Pohlmann urges St. Bernard Parish residents to
secure their vehicles so they won't be easy prey for burglars.
