Jindal Weekly Update

Governor Jindal had a successful week working with the State Legislature to
defeat an expansion of Obamacare in Louisiana along with announcing a new
economic development project for the state. The Governor opened the debate
this week on whether or not to accept Obamacare's Medicaid expansion in
Louisiana with a column outlining his opposition. The House Health and
Welfare Committee proceeded to vote down a bill to expand Obamacare, and the
Speaker of the House predicted that expansion efforts would ultimately not
succeed.

Here Is A Quick Recap Of The News About The Governor's Week:

Expanding Obamacare In Louisiana. This week, the Louisiana Legislature will
begin debating legislation that would force Louisiana to expand Medicaid as
part of President Obama's health care law. It's a bad move for Louisiana
taxpayers. . . . By expanding President Obama's health care law, 41 percent
of Louisiana's population would be dumped into Medicaid. Soon there will be
more people riding in the cart than people pulling the cart. The president
is gradually turning the world's greatest health care system into the
world's largest welfare system. . . . We know there is a better way. That's
why we've expanded access to care at hospitals across the state through
innovative public-private partnerships so that more people can access the
quality care they need.

The Louisiana House Health And Welfare Committee Proceeded To Vote Against

Louisiana House committee Wednesday effectively killed legislation that
would require state government to expand its Medicaid program. The House
Health and Welfare Committee voted 11-8 after five hours to involuntarily
defer the legislation aimed at implementing a key provision of the federal
Affordable Care Act, familiarly known as Obamacare. Involuntary deferral
means the legislation cannot be brought up for reconsideration. Republican
Gov. Bobby Jindal has rejected the expansion as not being in the state's or
its residents' best interest.

The Speaker Of The Louisiana House

Not Be Expanded As A Result Of The Vote. House Speaker Chuck Kleckley says
he doesn't believe any proposal to tap into the federal Medicaid expansion
money will win passage in the Louisiana Legislature this year.

State. Canadian methane company Methanex Corp. is moving a second $550
million methane plant from Chile to Louisiana. Gov. Bobby Jindal and
Methanex Vice President Gary Rowan announced the plans Thursday in Ascension
Parish, saying the move will add 35 jobs to 130 expected when the first
plant opens late next year in the Geismar community...

Collier Technical College Which Was Destroyed In Hurricane Katrina.
Hurricane Katrina's floodwaters left the Sidney Collier Technical College in
eastern New Orleans in ruins. On Friday, Gov. Bobby Jindal, the president of
the Louisiana Community and Technical College System and Delgado Community
College's chancellor ceremonially broke ground on a project to rebuild the
campus, which has not seen students for almost eight years. "The bottom line
is, this is a win-win for students," Jindal said. "It's more than just brick
and mortar, we're giving kids the tools they need to compete in this global
economy."

School Graduation Rates Have Hit A Record High. The latest graduation rate
is 72 percent, up 1 percentage point from 2011 and a sharp rise from the 61
percent in 2001. Gov. Bobby Jindal rightly hailed the increase as another
step toward raising Louisiana's educational attainment. While that last
phrase sounds a bit clinical, the impact of high school graduation in
society can hardly be overestimated. A high school graduate is better
prepared for work and better prepared to be able to take advantage of the
training programs and other educational opportunities available. . . . The
signs of progress ought to be hailed.
