St. Bernard Parish fire extinguished after smoke billowed up into Chalmette
sky

St. Bernard Parish residents who saw billowing smoke along Paris Road in
Chalmette on Saturday morning and early afternoon need not worry. The fire
simply was a large pile of tires burning on an abandoned property and St.
Bernard firefighters extinguished it about 12:45 p.m. Saturday.

Fire Chief Tommy Stone said it was just a one alarm fire. He added that it
was extinguished with the help of an excavator from parish government, which
allowed them to move the pile of tires around to get to the embers
underneath, and then douse with a wetting agent.

While leaving the scene about 1 p.m. Saturday, Deputy Chief Leon Lea said
the fire started sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Saturday in a
deserted area on Paris Road north of Judge Perez Drive.
