“This meeting is an opportunity for the community to have their questions answered,” said Sen. Morrell. “Our
citizens are, rightfully so, worried about this situation and we will be there to make sure that they have all of the
information they need to ensure that their families stay safe and healthy.”
The St. Bernard Parish water system tested positive for the rare brain-eating amoeba, Naegleria Fowleri.1 A four
year-old child died from an infection associated with the amoeba. He likely contracted it when warm, untreated
water went up his nose during play on a Slip n' Slide.
“Many constituents have called my office since this latest incident expressing concern for their relatives and
loved ones. Everyone in St. Bernard just wants answers to questions regarding safety and what steps are being
taken to remediate this issue,” added Morrell. “It is important for government to provide aid and information
when responding to emergency situations.”
