History will live again at Chalmette Battlefield's Battle of New Orleans
events planned for Jan. 8, 10-11. The public is invited to remember the
heroes of 1815 when more than 100 living history experts in period dress
mark the 199th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans at Chalmette
Battlefield, 8606 W. St. Bernard Highway, in Chalmette.

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the visitor center, hear the
roar of cannons, and meet soldiers and civilians preparing for the last
major battle of the War of 1812.

Activities kick off with a wreath-laying ceremony Jan. 8 at 10 a.m. at
Chalmette Battlefield. Admission is free. Parking will be allowed at the
battlefield. British and American troop reenactors will gather at Chalmette
Monument to honor the men who fought at the Battle of New Orleans.

The anniversary event will be held Jan. 10-11 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at
the battlefield. Admission is free. Living history experts dressed as
civilians and troops from 1815 will share their stories, fire cannons and
muskets, and explain the importance of the battle in American history.
Public parking will be at the St. Bernard Parish Government Complex, 8201 W.
Judge Perez Drive in Chalmette. Free shuttles will run continuously between
the parking area and battlefield.

A skirmish reenactment will be held Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. Admission is free. St.
Bernard Parish and the Louisiana Living History Foundation will present a
reenactment of the night battle of December 23, 1814. The reenactment will
be held at Sydney D. Torres Memorial Park with public parking at the St.
Bernard Parish Government Complex.

A lantern tour will be held Jan. 11, beginning at 5:45 p.m. at the
battlefield. Admission is by advance ticket purchase only. Guided tours by
lantern light will be held through American and British camps on the "night
before the battle." The first tour begins at 5:45 p.m.; and the last tour
begins at 7:15 p.m. Tours last about 90 minutes including shuttle travel
time from the offsite parking area. Tickets cost is $6 for children age 6
through adults. Tickets are beingsold at the battlefield visitor center open
Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A limited number of tickets
will be available. Tickets will not be sold at the door. All public parking
will be at the St. Bernard Parish Government Complex. Free shuttle buses
will transport tour groups to and from the battlefield.
