An endowed fund with the St. Bernard Kiwanis Foundation has been established
to benefit the St. Bernard-Arabi Kiwanis Club's Nunez College Scholarship
Program. The Cy Pres award of $69,393.92, established by Judge Robert
Buckley, has been designated to fund the new scholarship program.
Specifically, these scholarships will enhance numerous work force
development initiatives, including training potential refinery workers who
are enrolled in the PTEC program.

Buckley has been an active member of the Kiwanis Club of St. Bernard for 22
years. He has held numerous offices and board positions. Buckley said he is
pleased to support a program that will provide an annual scholarship in the
technical trade field.

"Cy Pres funds represent the unused administrative costs in enforcing class
action settlements and this represents a perfect use by funding scholarships
at Nunez Community College to improve the quality of the St. Bernard work
force," he said. "I am happy that the 34th Judicial District could partner
with Nunez Community College and the Kiwanis Foundation to establish these
recurring scholarships."

Shirley Pechon, president of the St. Bernard-Arabi Kiwanis Club, said she
appreciates Buckley's effort in directing the Cy Pres funds to the Kiwanis
Club.

"Our club and community are grateful for his generosity and commitment to
ensure that a scholarship program in the technical field will continue for
many generations," she said.
