A Terrebonne Parish man accused of trying to run down a St. Bernard Parish
sheriff's deputy in Chalmette was arrested Tuesday (April 22) on a charge of
attempted murder, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Tyrone Singleton, 28, of Gibson, tried to run over the deputy who was
attempting to stop him for speeding on April 13, the department said.
Singleton came to the Sheriff's Office on Tuesday (April 22) looking to
reclaim his BMW, seized on April 13 when it was found abandoned after the
encounter with the deputy, according to the Sheriff's Office

The deputy was using radar on east-bound traffic of 8300 block of West Judge
Perez Drive when he saw the speeding silver BMW approach with several
occupants inside. He then stepped off the curb and signaled to the driver to
stop, according to Sheriff Jimmy Pohlmann.

Apparently in an attempt to get out of the ticket, Singleton then tried to
run him over. The deputy jumped out of the way, and he only suffered a minor
injury when his arm was struck by a mirror of the vehicle, Polhmann said
late Tuesday.

Sheriff's deputies responding to the incident located the car abandoned just
several blocks away, behind a department store, but Singleton wasn't
immediately found, according to the Sheriff's Office.

When Singleton came into the Sheriff's Office on Tuesday to reclaim the
vehicle, he told sheriff's detectives he was innocent and that he had
reported the car stolen in New Orleans the same day that someone had tried
to run over the deputy, according to the Sheriff's Office.

But Pohlmann said Singleton was identified on a surveillance video from the
Wal-Mart parking lot in Chalmette. The video apparently shows Singleton
getting into the car about 2 p.m. April 13 and then leaving only minutes
before the vehicle was involved in the encounter with a deputy, which
occurred less than a mile away.

Singleton also was arrested on a charge of hit-and-run driving and on a
charge of aggravated flight from an officer. He was being held on Wednesday
morning in St. Bernard Parish Prison awaiting a hearing to set his bond,
according to the Sheriff's Office.

Singleton had an outstanding arrest warrant on a drug charge in New Orleans
and a separate outstanding warrant in Gretna, Pohlmann said.
