Fall is fast approaching, and with it brings a whole new season of events.
At Nunez Community College in Chalmette, the 13th season of the History
Lecture Series begins. The kickoff of a series of lectures on the Battle of
New Orleans, began with "A Gulf Coast Campaign" lecture presented by Ron
Chapman.

The Nunez History Lecture Series is a compilation of free lectures that was
created to provide a cultural opportunity, to explore the rich heritage of
St. Bernard Parish and the surrounding areas.

The History Series is a monthly event that provides a different topic or
subject on the first Monday of each month of the school year. Each lecture
is proceeded by a wine-and-cheese reception at 6:30 p.m. with the lecture
beginning at 7 p.m. Admission to the lecture is free and open to the public.

"The History Lecture Series has entertained the public of St. Bernard, as
well as Jefferson, Orleans, and the Northshore for 13 plus years," Michele
Minor, Career Service Coordinator at Nunez and History Lecture Series
Coordinator, said. "We have had a vast array of speakers, from our own
professors to historians in Louisiana, and popular local celebrities."

Minor said audiences range from academics and historians to regular folks.
"Nunez has done a great service to the community, by hosting lectures which
are free and open to the public."

The upcoming lectures on the Battle of New Orleans features "Role of Jean
Lafitte," presented by Jack Henkels, Oct. 6; "Role of Renato Beluche,"
presented by Thais Solano, Nov. 3; and "Battle of Lake Borgne," presented by
Sam Cavell, Dec. 1.

"When budget cuts threatened the continuation of the Lecture Series, added
support of the Greater New Orleans Foundation's Exxon Mobil Fund Grant
allowed us to continue to offer this informative, entertaining feature to
our community," Minor said.
