Regarding that Talbert ring grain on ebay that I emailed about yesterday:

I've since been in contact with the seller, Rob Cooper, and he assures 
me that it is indeed just a trick of the lighting and NOT a fill, so I 
am content.  I know from experience how weird pipe photography can be 
sometimes, especially the ways that light interacts with stain in wood. 
    I am quite relieved to have the situation settled, as I always want 
to stand by the craftsmanship of my pipes, no matter how old they may be.
