[Woodcarver] What is relief carving?

I was just reading yesterday about a man who made figureheads for ships.  
They too, are cut down the middle and hollowed out and then put back together 
using a peg system.  I was also on another site where they were talking about a 
carving with a flat back which had been mounted to a flat piece of wood.  They 
referred to it as an "applied relief".     Maura
