[Woodcarver] Reversing Motor Direction

Byron, I have reversed many a motor. The motor does not know which direction to run,
so you have starter windings. The DPDT swich has 6 terminals. The two wires from the motor are attached to the center windings are attached to the two terminals in the center of the switch. The terminal at the top right is connected to the terminal at the bottom left & the terminal at the top left is connected to the terminal on the bottom right.

Thanks for the comments . My motor is capable of being reversed by switching the red and black lines . The DPDT switch is to allow you to do this without opening up the motor . I was at a local electrical store where I got the switch and got a sketch from them --still no luck . You may be right and I will need to go to a electrical motor store .

Denny is correct. The direction is determined by field coil windings in an AC motor. Might I suggest that you find a local place that specilizes in electric motors. Take the motor them and ask about a reversing switch. Electricity is one of those things that if you don't understand it you can create a real hot spot, maybe even hot enough to require the services of your local fire department. Byron

I have tried to wire a double pole, double throw switch to a 1/4 horse motor I use to drive a 1x42 " belt used to sharpen my carving tools . I have followed the instructions that I got when I bought the switch however the motor still does not reverse . Obviously I am missing something ---has anyone wired such a switch . Thanks Brian
