[game_preservation] More Classic Games at GDC

The other thing about press passes is they usually only give them for
certain events. You can snag an expo pass sometimes with those, too, but
usually it's just a ticket to a single lecture or event. That's how it was
for me when I applied through my website at least (which is a specialized
gaming site, so that might be why).

Tickets run $950 for a main conference pass. I think it's a $50 discount for
an IGDA member (but maybe more like you said). GDC also offered a holiday
discount that expired on the 11th for $100. The alumni discount of 50%
expired Dec 1. So you basically have to plan to attend prior to anything
being announced. Volunteer deadlines expire in something like November or
December; I didn't apply this year because I didn't feel I would have the
money (my job is with a college, so they don't give hours until one week
before classes start...)

If you ask me, the whole system a big crock, basically a money-making
system. It seems to me they do this on purpose (announce the big names) on
the last week to get people to make instant decisions without thinking.
That's how they make money, and I bet if you looked at the sales numbers,
they would be very high on the last day of the early bird discount compared
with their other discounts.

Unfortunately, it's when they announce names like this that I start to get
excited and wish I was going...
