Carl, with all due respect to Bowser please do not assume that they did
their research on this. We have beaten this to death several times on this
list. A good number of PRR4 Bay hoppers were at leased to the Virginian
during the war. The evidence we have is the lease was only for about 18
months. No doubt because it was in the war, we have found no photographic
evidence whatsoever that these cars were repainted, or have any Virginian
herald nor anything on them. Bowser did these years ago; we discussed
the topic at that time, and a few times since, and all the evidence we had
was that the paint scheme and lettering were speculation. A few years ago,
they asked us for any information we had because they were going to
re-issue them. Our suggestion was that they simply not do it because we
don't want people thinking that they're real. I believe they changed the
herald, still re-issued them. Our best information is that they are not
prototypical. If anybody finds any information to the contrary, we'd love
to know about it.

Bowser has done some really good things for us, but sometimes at least with
the Virginian, they have played fast and loose a few times. At one time
they did three covered hoppers, which was kind of perplexing because
the railroad only had two, and of the three they did only one has a correct
number. Usually, they're much better.

Frank Bongiovanni
If my comments above make me a rivet counter, I will wear that proudly.
