Governor calls on legislators to protect voting rights, reform levee boards

"We are recovering from two hurricanes and two floods. Today we witnessed a
tidal wave of politics.

"When I called the state's legislative leaders to Baton Rouge, I asked them
to be united and personally involved in the struggle to bring forth
recovery.

"Holding on to the politics of the past rather than reaching out to the
future and demanding change continues to put the people last.

"Protecting a person's right to vote is as basic as Apple Pie. It's a right
that I will fight to protect, and the U.S. Department of Justice must ensure
the integrity of the process. Our legislative leaders should do no less.

"Our people want to come home. Our businesses want to get to work. That's
why I will continue fighting for meaningful levee board reform that's not
entrenched in politics, puts people's safety first, and assures us of
accessing the $12 million in research funds from the federal government. "
