True, they are very important. Yet I have always wondered about the four way
stop signs.
I remember learning that, when two streets intersect and there are no signs,
the car from the right always has the right of way. That implies one stops
to let them pass. Any intersection is therefore automatically a four way
stop or at least a four way yield. 
If drivers would remember this rule, fewer accidents would happen. 
Then again, I am so used now, (driving here for over a quarter of a century)
to having signs, that I must have given up my good sense and rely on the
signs as well, just driving on through the intersection. Bad habit, but
reality.
