Video production course offered in St. Bernard

Susan Hamovitch, who came from New York to the New Orleans area last year as
a volunteer for hurricane relief and is now living in St. Bernard Parish,
said she wants to help residents express themselves and document life in the
parish for a possible film.

Hamovitch, who teaches video production at Manhattan's The New School
University and is affiliated with the New Orleans Video Access Center, will
offer a free series of 8-10 workshops on documentary filmmaking, according
to a news release on the St. Bernard Parish government website,
www.sbpg.net.

An introductory meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Community
Center of St. Bernard, 1107 Lebeau St., just off St. Claude Avenue in the
old Masonic lodge function hall located on the side of the former Rite-Aid
Pharmacy.

Space is limited, said Hamovitch, who can be reached at 1-917-443-9266.
Those who can't make the first meeting can come the next week on Feb. 28 but
should call to confirm, she said.

The series of workshops are for people who want to "learn the art and craft
of filmmaking but don't know where to start,'' said Hamovitch, who said she
would like to help residents express themselves and document life in St.
Bernard Parish.

"The people can document their own lives and those of their friends,'' she
said. "I'm hoping we'll have good material and compile it into one film -
something to show the outside world about St. Bernard Parish.''

Residents who own video recorders should bring them, Hamovitch said, but
there will also be available three cameras borrowed from the New Orleans
Video Access Center.
