Subcommittee To Examine Legislative Reforms to National Flood Insurance
Program

Washington, DC - Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), chairwoman of the House
Financial Services Subcommittee on Housing and Community Opportunity,
announced that the subcommittee will hold a hearing to examine legislative
proposals to improve the National Flood Insurance Program. The hearing will
focus on a legislative reform package drafted by the Chairwoman that would
reauthorize the program for 5 years, delay the implementation of new rate
maps, phase-in actuarial rates, and provide other resources for homeowners
and communities. The hearing will also examine legislation authored by Rep.
Gene Taylor to add wind insurance to the flood insurance program.

Testifying will be several Members of Congress with an interest in flood
insurance issues. Other witnesses will include officials from the Federal
Emergency Management Administration - which administers the flood insurance
program - and the Government Accountability Office, real estate
professionals, representatives of insurance companies, flood plain managers,
environmentalists, and others.
