Old Arabi Neighborhood Commission Established

Certificate of Appropriateness is required for building permit in the Arabi
Historic District

The St. Bernard Parish Council adopted an ordinance creating the Old Arabi
Neighborhood Commission. The Old Arabi Historic District Commission was
established to preserve the historic nature of the district and to give
guidance on future development. The history of St. Bernard is important to
the Parish and the region. Much of the past can be found in the architecture
of the Old Arabi Historic District and the Commission is tasked with making
sure that the historic integrity is maintained and that future development
is compatible with the existing architectural elements. This is an
opportunity to set design standards going forward not only for residences,
but the commercial corridor on St. Claude Avenue.

Property owners need to be aware that a Certificate of Appropriateness from
the Commission is required to obtain a building permit in the Historic
District and be familiar with its goals as they go through the design
process.

The commission, which consists of seven (7) members, shall review issues of
aesthetic concerns pertaining to the exterior and at the structure within
the following boundaries:

continue East following St. Claude Ave., then St. Bernard Hwy. (LA46) and
